Autumn
I’ve written before that I’m a big fan of autumn. It’s my favorite season. Now that we are firmly into autumn territory…and close enough to the technical definition of autumn, I thought I’d blog about it a little.
People tend to think of spring, or perhaps New Year’s, as a time of renewal. For me, I’ve never felt that way. I think a lot of it has to do with the calendar growing up. It’s not as common now but once upon a time, the fall season was the season where all the AAA video games would come out. Plenty of big hitters release in this window but the calendar is far more balanced now than it was when I was growing up. The NBA season always started near Halloween, which was a big deal in my family.
Speaking of Halloween, it’s my favorite holiday. I like spooky things and candy. I like both of those probably more than I should. I’ve always been open I’m not a huge fan of children but when I got my first apartment out of school, I bought 2 big bags of candy thinking kids would come to my apartment door. Why? No clue. Dummy move in hindsite. Well…I don’t know…it’s not like that candy was wasted.
I’m not a fan of hot weather. I’ve come to realize not only is my wardrobe full of my preferred clothing, with is cold weather clothing, but it’s the only style I own. The Sun and I do not get along. I’m far too pale.
Speaking of the weather, it is way more comfortable to run in fall weather than any other season. Spring is ok. I don’t mind spring but winter and summer running is asking to do a difficult task. We do it because we have to, but it’s not the preferred environment. I also far prefer the sunrise and sunset times at this point in the year. Living in Seattle, sunlight can be very scarce in the winter and it feels the need to make up for it in the summer. I really dislike the 5am sunrises and the 9pm sunsets. Today the sun came up around 6:45 and will go down at 7:30 which is all fine. When we set the clocks back in November, the sun will come up at 7 and go down at around 5. I get that the sun going away early in the day stinks for a lot of people. I feel for you on that.
This long post was an exploration. Trying to figure out the tangiable things I enjoy about the season. I think at the end of the day, their is a comfort in it all for me. Jeans, sweater, hot* coffee, a new game or two, and some spooky movies. Sure I could do all of this whenever but it feels like the sweet spot for my favorite way of being is in the fall.
What’s your favorite season?
*I drink my coffee hot year around. Yes…in an apartment without AC, that can be tough in July but it’s my preferred method.
