Catching Up

Hi! It’s been awhile. It’s me, Andrew. I used to blog here fairly often. Been away for a little bit. Completely by accident but trying to get back on the blog track. So I figured I’d log what was keeping me away for a little bit.

The WordPress drama.
This is the item that feels like it had the most intentionality stopping the blog for a bit. ICYMI (you’re lucky) but basically the founder of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, has gone off the deep end and started a fight with a web host. It’s something that should’ve been handled in court but since there are some folks that just feel the need make everyone aware of their grievance, it has spilled over into the public knowledge.

Honestly, I think Mullenweg’s primary point is valid but I have so little tolerance for “hurting users to get my way” and acting like a toddler online that I was very much considering moving this site, and others, off of WordPress. Where I’ve landed is at the moment, I’m not moving anything but no new sites on WordPress, for now. We will see.

I started a new job
…Well sorta. Mid-October I moved from Bungie into a role at Sony Interactive Entertainment. That’s been a fairly smooth, but odd, transition. It’s ongoing and over some time it will feel more comfortable. All of my new teammates are really awesome. I usually default to “if everyone is kind to each other, and is committed to good work, everything else will figure itself out”. There are some smart people doing that last bit, but for me, just committing to doing my best for the player each day will always yield good results. It was an emotional change for a bit but I’m pretty excited.

The election
I guess I don’t want to harp on this too much but as the election gets closer here in the United States, the more I pay attention to the day to day polling, campaign events, etc. Is it healthy? Probably not but I do find it fascinating. I’ve spent less time reading tech news and learning new things because of this, so less to blog about.

However, the new job has been started, the election is just about here. We are firmly in my favorite part of the year now. I expect the blogging and dev projects to pick up again soon. It was a weird end of summer, early fall, but time marches on. I posted 36 blogs last year, and only 22 so far this year. I doubt I’ll hit 36 again which is a let down but we will see.
